The 45th Annual Creative Arts and Entertainment Daytime Emmy Awards were presented on Friday, April 27, at a gala held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California.
"Tonight's awards ceremony is a reminder of the depth and breadth of Daytime television," said Chuck Dages, Chairman, NATAS. "It is with great pleasure that we honor those who work tirelessly to bring us the great programming available on every platform, in every genre, everyday."
The Creative Arts portion of the Daytime Emmys honors excellence in mostly non-acting categories -- the behind-the-scenes technology that makes it possible for there to be episodes of the soaps: Outstanding Technical Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design, and more. Awards are also handed out to non-soap programming, including categories likes Outstanding Writing in a Children's Series.
In recent years, as the number of digital series has increased, the Daytime Emmys have created a number of categories to honor excellence in those categories. This year, the Academy added categories to honor Directing, Writing, and Guest Performers in Digital Dramas. As in years past, the star-studded The Bay took home the most awards in the digital categories. The show's creative force, Gregori J. Martin, won the first-ever award for Directing in a Digital Series. Kristos Andrews pulled a threepeat in the Lead Actor in a Digital Series category.
The Bold and the Beautiful took home the most awards on the night, tying Sesame Street with seven wins. One of B&B's winners, Mike Cassidy, was awarded for coordinating the fight scenes between Quinn and Sheila (played by Rena Sofer and Kimberlin Brown.)
General Hospital won three Emmys, including one for Outstanding Original Song. The Young and the Restless picked up two awards. Though it had a whopping 11 nominations, Days of our Lives ended the night empty-handed.
Sid and Marty Krofft were the recipients of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award in the Creative Arts field. "
"Sid and Marty Krofft, our Daytime Creative Arts honorees, are masters of children's television programming and have been part of my family viewing since the creation of H.R. Pufnstuf, Sigmund & the Sea Monsters and Land Of The Lost," said David Michaels, SVP, Daytime Emmy Awards, NATAS. "Their terrific variety programs such as The Donny and Marie Series on ABC and Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters have only solidified the breadth of their talent across the television spectrum."
The Daytime Emmy Awards are presented to daytime television programs that are broadcast nationally between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The eligibility period for this year's Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards was January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017.
