When Michelle Stafford took to the stage after winning the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress at this year's Daytime Emmys, the Young and the Restless star looked like a million bucks in a scarlet red figure-flattering gown. However, Stafford now admits that the dress didn't cost her much at all.
Being a busy single mom of two who has a lead role on a soap while also running a skincare business, Stafford didn't have much time to put into shopping. She also didn't want to spend a small fortune.
"At first, I couldn't really find a dress to wear this year," Stafford told Soap Opera Digest. "I have limited time because I have so much going on with my kids and with my [skin care] company so I couldn't do a whole shopping spree and also I wasn't willing to pay a few thousand dollars."
To that end, Stafford, who plays Phyllis Summers on the CBS soap, tried to borrow a dress from a big designer but didn't have much luck.
"I did ask some fashion houses if I could wear one of their dresses and nobody really bit, nobody was really interested in helping me out. The dress I found was actually inexpensive and I liked the fishtail flare at the bottom. When I put it on, it looked decent and I was like, 'Okay, there you go,' and that's how I found my Emmy dress."
June 7 wasn't the first time that Stafford had to get dolled up in a Daytime Emmy gown. Last year's Emmys were postponed due to the Writers Guild of America strike and didn't take place until December 15. For that ceremony, Stafford wore a gown she previewed on December 12.
"Is it a dress or is it a doily...you are gonna decide," she wrote on Instagram next to a pic of her sheer black gown that revealed almost all but covered her up in all the right places.
It was indeed a dress, but it was one that sent tongues wagging. Not one to let a few comments get her down, Stafford posted another video of herself in the dress.
"There was a bit of discussion on my dress for the #daytimeemmys in my last post," Stafford wrote. "I just want to give some of you another look just in case you wanted to say some more 'things'."
